Stories and Images from the 2017 GRAD Investiture Ceremony

More than 800 guests and graduating students filled the Spaulding Auditorium for the third Investiture Ceremony for graduating students, the first for the new School of Graduate and Advanced Studies.
 

Student Marshals were Gilbert Rahme (PhD Genetics, MCB) and Farah Salam (MALS).

The 2017 John W. Strohbehn Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research was awarded to Matthew Ung.

Justin Kim (Psychological and Brain Sciences) receieved the Hannah T. Croasdale award.
Daryl Deford (Mathematics) and Michael Stevenson (Chemistry) were recipients of the Graduate Teaching Award.

Graduates in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program receiving the Byam-Shaw Brownstone Thesis Excellence Awards were:
Creative Writing: Steve Dragswolf
General Liberal Studies: Brian Estrada
Globalization Studies: Samuel Williamson

And an overall Thesis Excellence Award being presented to Michael Rodriguez.

Student speakers were Evelyn Zablah (MALS) and GIlbert Rahme (PhD Genetics, MCB)

Graduate Investiture Ceremony and Dartmouth Commencement

The School of Graduate and Advanced Studies at Dartmouth will host an Investiture Ceremony for all of its graduating master's and PhD students on Saturday, June 10, 2017.

Due to the high probability of rain, students should meet at 3pm for photographs in Alumni Hall, not in front of Dartmouth Hall.

The reception will still take place outdoors on Baker lawn.

Students will gather in Alumni Hall for class photographs starting promptly at 3:00 pm and will proceed to the Hopkins Center for the Arts after class photos are taken.

The Ceremony will take place at 4:00 pm in Spaulding Auditorium, Hopkins Center for the Arts.
Reception to follow on the Baker Lawn.

Student Instructions for Investiture Ceremony and Rehearsal

Academic Regalia:
Caps and gowns are worn with appropriate attire during the Investiture ceremony on Saturday and during the Commencement ceremony on Sunday.

Master's caps, gowns, and hoods can be purchased online and picked up in the Graduate and Advanced Studies Office, 37, Dewey Field Road, Room 437, Wednesday, June 7 through Friday, June 9 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (The cost is $46.50).

PhD caps, gowns, and hoods can be paid for online and picked up in the Graduate and Advanced Studies Office, 37, Dewey Field Road, Room 437, Wednesday June 7 through Friday, June 9 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (The cost is $91 for rental and $808 for purchase).

Please note that the absolute last day to order academic regalia is Sunday, May 14.

The PhD regalia (cap, gown, and hood) must be returned to the Graduate and Advanced Studies Office directly after the ceremonies on Sunday.

Parking:
Parking in Dewey Field lot is encouraged and more likely to be available, parking closer to town may be available in the Town of Hanover parking lot on Lebanon Street.

Photography:
Arrangements will be made for a professional photography company to take a picture after each graduate's name is read.
Investiture guests will be prohibited from taking pictures or videotaping from locations beyond where they are seated.

10:00 am:
Investiture rehearsal. Meet in Spaulding Auditorium.
5:30 pm - 7:30 pm: President Hanlon and Gail Gentes host a reception for graduates and their guests. President's House, Webster Avenue.

Saturday, June 10, 2017
2:45 pm: Class photos: students gather in front of Dartmouth Hall for class photos. 5 formal class portraits: PhD; MALS; AM; MS; TDI. Rain Location: Alumni Hall
4:00 pm: School of Graduate and Advanced Studies Investiture Ceremony.

5:30 pm: Reception. Graduates, faculty, and guests are invited to a reception at the Baker Library lawn immediately following the photo and ceremony.

Dartmouth's Commencement exercises will take place on the Dartmouth Green on Sunday, June 11 at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony will be held outdoors, rain or shine. Please bring raincoats and umbrellas if appropriate (please note that umbrellas are only permitted when there is heavy rain).
On Commencement morning, graduate and professional school students gather at 8:00 a.m. (PhD, MS, AM, MALS , MS (TDI), MEM, BE) in front of Wentworth Hall.
