Specific Requirements and Deadlines for UNSG Courses

Specific requirements and deadlines for UNSG 295, 296, 297, and 298:

UNSG 295, 296, 297, and 298 require an internship or other external practical training experience that is related to the student's program of study in their declared major. The courses are designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply academic principles and skills in real-life situations outside the classroom. These courses are graded on a credit/no credit basis.

Requirements for receiving credit include:

1. Written plan for the internship:

A brief description of the internship project to be submitted to The Guarini School Registrar (Gary.Hutchins@dartmouth.edu) at least two weeks before the start of the internship term. Please include: Name of Student; Current Major; UNSG Course Number Requested; Name of company or organization; Location of internship; Dates of internship; Onsite internship supervisor name and contact information; Hours expected to spend working at internship; Brief description of internship project; Brief description of how internship is integral to your course of study at Dartmouth. (1 page)

2. Mid-term report:

Due to the Faculty Supervisor by the end of the 5th week of the term. Should include a summary of progress to-date, changes in scope, and expected outcomes. (2-3 pages)

3. Final paper:

Reflect on your experience and the ways in which it enhanced and furthered your academic program of study. Due to the Faculty Supervisor by the last day of final examination period. The paper should include: Your assigned task or tasks; a self-assessment; the three most valuable things you learned; your favorite and least favorite parts of the experience; would you work there again?  Why or why not? (at least 6 pages)

N.B. All three written requirements should adhere to the following formatting: maximum font size of 12 pts; maximum margin size 1.0"; and no more than 1.5x spacing.  
 

4. Onsite supervisor assessment:

Please use the appropriate form, available here. Due to the Faculty Supervisor by the last day of final examination period. If your employer is not willing or able to provide the on-site assessment, a "letter of completion" of the internship will suffice. Some employers have policies in place that prohibit the provision of assessments or evaluations. If this is the case, please provide the letter of completion as well as a letter from the employer explaining their policy against providing an assessment.  If your employer is not willing or able to provide an on-site assessment, or letter of completion and explanation, you will not be eligible to enroll in a UNSG course.
