What do you consider your hometown, and how has it shaped who you are today?
As someone born and raised in Houston, I will always consider it my home.
Can you tell us about your current research at Dartmouth and what excites you most about it?
My research interests focus on how state political and social institutions impact welfare policy outcomes across the U.S. My dissertation research specifically addressed how state politics shape policy experiences through welfare policy. Currently, I am working on a book proposal that examines how welfare policy take-up shapes political attitudes and behavior.
What is your academic background? Where did you complete your graduate studies, and what led you to pursue a postdoc?
I completed my undergraduate studies at Texas Southern University, a historically black college. I completed my PhD this past summer (2025) at the University of Houston. Additionally, I have been teaching at a University of Michigan summer program in quantitative methods for the past several years.
What inspired you to pursue a postdoc position at Dartmouth?
I was interested in Dartmouth because of the strong public policy focus at the Rockefeller Center. I wanted to be surrounded by experts in the field, while in an environment where I could continue to grow and develop as a scholar.
As a member of the Dartmouth Postdoc Association's executive board, what motivated you to get involved, and what do you hope to accomplish in this role?
I was excited to hear about an opportunity to support my fellow postdocs at Dartmouth. Additionally, I was also interested in developing my leadership skills, networking across the campus, and learning more about life in the Upper Valley.
What are some key skills or experiences you've gained during your postdoc that you think will be valuable in your next career step?
The opportunity to have dedicated time for my research, mentor undergraduate students, and create new networks within the institution has been invaluable.
What are your career goals after your postdoc?
I am interested in pursuing a career at the intersection of public policy and academic research.
Which resources, career support programs, or professional development opportunities at Dartmouth have been most valuable to you, and how have they impacted your experience?
The Learning and Design Center always has a ton of professional development and teaching development opportunities across campus. I have signed up for several workshops that I am looking forward to!
