PTEN is a master regulator of cell proliferation and migration, and has specific activity in the central nervous system to inhibit dendritic sprouting and abnormal neuronal migration in development.  Conversely, knockdown of PTEN has been proposed as a potential mechanism for promoting nervous system regeneration, I am studying the effects of conditional PTEN knockout in the mouse peripheral nervous system on sciatic nerve regeneration, in order to assess the feasibility of regulating PTEN expression to aid in recovery from peripheral nerve injuries in patients.
