Through the application of quantitative analyses, design and optimization approaches, and technology developments to biological systems, chemical and biological engineers have made tremendous contributions to the fields of biotechnology, metabolic engineering, protein engineering, and synthetic biology. Recently, our understanding of the human immune system, which consists of highly complex networks of immunological cells, molecules, and chemicals, has grown substantially over the years to the extent where one can take a more integrated and systemic approach to immunology. Immunoengineering is a new and very rapidly growing interdisciplinary research area that aims to apply engineering principles, standards, and tools to better comprehend our immune system and to optimize various parameters of immune responses.
