Jonathan Kleen

I look at memory circuits in the human brain and how they are affected by epilepsy, and also work on multimodal visualization techniques for seizure localization.

PEMM created the opportunity for me to work in a research lab that was very clinically oriented (epilepsy and cognition) at the DHMC, an opportunity that wasn't easily available before PEMM existed (I was the first graduate student in the Holmes lab). This increased my exposure to the clinical side including collaborating with multiple neurologists, who helped foster my later graduate work in which we performed a translational study - we found that my findings in rats were very similar to my findings in humans (patients with epilepsy). This drastically influenced my career, as my research now is exclusively with people, trying to figure out why their epilepsy disrupts cognition and memory. This fuses perfectly with my clinical side as a neurologist/epileptologist, by helping me to focus my research on the symptoms that my patients say trouble them the most, so that we can create better meaningful treatments in the future.
