Molecular and Systems Biology

About the Program

The Department of Molecular and Systems Biology (MSB) studies complex problems in molecular, cell, or developmental biology, regeneration, neuroscience, and mechanisms of diseases, including cancer. We combine approaches in genetics, genomics, epigenetics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, and computational systems biology. Our department offers a dynamic and interactive environment founded on collaborative and collegial interactions
throughout Dartmouth.

In MSB, discoveries made in model systems are translated to clinical study and, just as often, discoveries initially made in patients are understood in the lab: from bench to bedside and back. MSB faculty are supported by federal agencies and private foundations and lead institutional projects such as an NIH Computational Biology Center for Excellence in Biomedical Research (COBRE) and a multi-center Virtual Consortium for Translational/Transdisciplinary Environmental Research (ViCTER). Our trainees are encouraged to apply for and have had considerable success at obtaining prestigious fellowships and awards. MSB also sponsors a yearly research symposium to feature their scientific accomplishments.

Graduate student research is at the heart of MSB. We value enthusiasm, creativity, and seek out those with the courage and resolve to pursue groundbreaking ideas. MSB is highly committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive population and appreciate colleagues who work effectively with individuals from all backgrounds. Our graduates enjoy remarkable success in academia, industry, and public policy.
