Course Enrollment Guide

Year One

Although a first year student may take elective courses during the first year, we strongly encourage against taking any extra courses until the second year to concentrate on the core course components.

Fall Term

The program designation is determined by your research rotation assignment for the term, i.e. BIOC  or  BIOL  or  CANB  or  MICR  or  GENE.

  • BIOL 169 – if you are assigned a TA for the summer term, enroll in this course

REMINDER – you are required to be on campus during at least part of every term. 

Year Two

Fall, Winter, Spring Terms

  • Graduate Research I (197, 198, 199) Thesis lab determines program designation.
  • Journal Club
  • TA Assignment – If you are assigned to TA for one of these terms, register for BIOL 169 in the term assigned.
  • Elective Courses – consult the MCB course listing for course availability.

Summer Term

  • Graduate Research (197, 198, 199)
  • No journal clubs during summer term
    • Select the appropriate Graduate Research number to achieve 3 course credits for the term.

REMINDER – you are required to be on campus during at least part of every term. 

Years Three and Above

In Fall Term of your 3rd year, you'll enroll in GENE 100, the Qualifying Exam Course to receive credit for your Qualifying Exam grade. Upon successfully completing your qualifying exam, you will begin enrolling in Graduate Research 297, 298, or 299.
