Dr. Alewine's research focuses on identifying and testing novel precision therapies for the treatment of patients with pancreatic cancer. The dense and immunosuppressive microenvironment of pancreatic cancer continues to stymie the anti-tumor activity of targeted protein- and antibody-based therapies that are highly effective in other types of cancer. Consequently, current standard of care treatments for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma rely predominately on combination chemotherapy regimens that are difficult for many patients to tolerate and often cause significant toxicity. The Alewine lab is interested in identifying and overcoming tumor-related barriers to effective use of protein- and antibody-based therapies in pancreatic cancer.
