We have an energetic scientific community of over 30 faculty, 30 postdoctoral fellows/research associate/scientists and 50 graduate students with programs recognized both nationally and internationally. Our laboratories are enthusiastically involved in Cystic Fibrosis and Lung Biology; Cellular, Molecular and Translational Immunology; and Microbiology, and Molecular Pathogenesis (M2P2) interdepartmental Programs, each supported by NIH center grants and/or other federal and private funding. Investigators are actively engaged in innovations leading to SBIR/STTR funding and Phase I Clinical Trials. Broad areas of research also include all branches of microbiology, immunology, microbiomes, and bioinformatics.
Our strong interdisciplinary research is further enhanced by a variety of interdepartmental courses, several weekly Journal Clubs, a Research in Progress series, and many funded seminar series including the Department of Microbiology and Immunology weekly series. To further foster collaboration and education, these are available to all faculty members and trainees, many of whom are supported by the three department-based NIH T32 training grants. Research funds for pilot studies and research development are available through the NCI-funded Dartmouth Cancer Center, the SYNERGY NIH CTSA grant, the two NIH Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence in Lung Biology and Immunology, and the Hitchcock Foundation (a part of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center).
Also, key to our success, is our administrative staff, supporting both financial and grants management (best practices and compliance); computing support; AALAC-accredited Center for Comparative Medicine and Research; and our state of the art cores facilities. Of note the three NIH/NIGMS P20/P30 Institutional Development Awards (COBRE/INBRE) foster career development of promising trainee and junior faculty scientists and expand existing and develop new core facilities for the greater good of the institution and region.
