Application Timeline

December 1st - Application Deadline for all applications

  • All supporting documentation (transcripts, letters of recommendation, TOEFL for International students) are due December 1.
  • November 1st - Start of application review for U.S.-based applicants begins on a rolling basis. The review process will last through February.
  • January/February - Our 2025 in-person interview weekend dates are January 16-19 and February 23-26. Virtual interviews for individuals residing outside of the US are scheduled for January 29-31.
  • Late February/early March - Applicants are typically notified of their admissions status

  • Personal Statements (required) The application will ask you to complete two essay prompts about your experiences, motivations, and research.
  • Curriculum Vitae (required)
  • Description of laboratory research experience Within the MCB Supplemental section, you will list your laboratory research experiences (up to 5).  This will include name of institution, topic of research and estimated hours per week.   
  • Three letters of recommendation. We encourage applicants to provide at least one recommendation letter from a mentor or supervisor who has known the applicant in a research capacity.  Letters of recommendation must be submitted through the application by the recommender.  We will not accept letter submitted via Interfolio.
  • College transcripts (undergraduate and graduate, if applicable). Uploads of unofficial transcripts are accepted in the application, but official transcripts are required for enrollment.  All components of an application are taken into consideration.  Therefore, it is not possible to make an assessment of materials/qualifications before an application is submitted.
  • We do not require GRE standard or subject scores though a strong GRE score may help your application.
  • Official TOEFL (for International students) exam scores from ETS. We also accept official IELTS exam scores in place of TOEFL exams. We require either of these exams for applicants for whom English is not their native language and who have not received a degree from an English-speaking undergraduate institution.  Note:  Applicants from the following countries are not required to report language proficiency test scores:  Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Ghana, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Slovenia, and Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
  • Support materials not uploaded to the application website must be received by the application deadline to be considered. Use the mailing address below for ALL support materials sent by postal mail.
  • We do not require applicants to find faculty advisors during the application process. All students complete 3 research rotations which are selected at the beginning of each term.
