Dartmouth graduate student organizers are gearing up for Science Day 2016, Saturday, which takes place April 9. This will be the fourth in a series of annual events that offer scientifically inclined youths a taste of what their future might hold.
Science Day is primarily for sixth- through ninth-graders from neighboring towns in Vermont and New Hampshire, though some students have traveled from farther away to attend in past years. Dartmouth’s Graduate Women in Science and Engineering is hosting the day’s activities with funding from the Graduate Student Council. The day will feature interactive demonstrations in which students can learn about what working scientists do every day.
Activities kick off at 10 a.m. with a check-in at the Class of 1978 Life Sciences Center, where visitors will be greeted by volunteers equipped with maps, directions, and a list of activities, which will run through 3 p.m.

“We are catering to students debating what they might do after high school, perhaps considering college studies in one of the sciences,” says Jessica DeSimone, a graduate student in microbiology and the organizer of Science Day 2016. “There will be some stations set up in the life sciences building and others around the campus. Each department tries to exhibit in the building where they actually do their work every day.”
