Alumni Profiles: Niranjan Bose , '04 PhD in Biochemistry (MCB)

Niranjan Bose is an '04 alumnus who has benefited from both research experience and networking in business circles to lead in one of the world's well known organizations, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Niranjan holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Dartmouth College and an MS in biological sciences and BS in pharmaceutical sciences from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India. He also received the Business Bridge Diploma from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. During his time at Dartmouth, Niranjan served as Program Coordinator for International House and held positions in the Graduate Student Council, Cricket Club, and International Students Association.

Niranjan's involvement in social activities and his experience at Tuck gave him valuable networking and consulting skills required in today's job market for graduate students. Upon earning his PhD, Bose joined Strategic Decisions Group as Associate Consultant where he advised pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients on management and development of company strategy, revenue, and assisted them on business competition in the industry. He then joined the Gates Foundation in 2007 as a Business Analyst, then as Program Officer for the Infectious Diseases and Global Health Program in 2009, working to develop and manage portfolios of investments for vaccines for enteric and diarrheal disease.

Three years later, he moved on to Chief of Staff position in the Office of the President for Global Health Program within the foundation. Today, Naranjan is the Science Advisor to Bill Gates, serving as Chief of Staff of science and health strategy at bgC3, LLC, a research company established by Gates to bring scientific and technological services to disease prevention and to combat global poverty.
