Application Requirements

All application materials must be submitted directly through the online application system. We do not accept paper application materials. Official transcripts should not be sent to the Guarini School office during the application process.

GRE 

  • Optional.

English Language Proficiency

  • Language proficiency test scores are required for non-US citizens, with the exception of those who are earning or have earned a degree from institutions in the US or Canada, or whose primary language of instruction at their non-US institution was English.
  • We accept TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo 
  • The ETS code for the Guarini School is 3351

Personal Statements

  • 2 required personal statement prompts.

Recommendation Letters

  • 3 required, up to 4 accepted.

Transcripts

  • Your most recent unofficial transcripts should be uploaded as part of your application. Official transcripts are not needed during the application process.

Program Supplement 

  • Musical Experience (max 250 words)
    • Please describe your musical background. Do you play any instruments? If so, what is your level of proficiency? Have you studied any music theories or histories? Please outline the lineages to which you've been exposed.
  • Work Samples
    • Please submit 3 work samples in support of your application. These may include original compositions, recordings of performances, scores, texts, original computer programs, max patches, video games, etc.
    • All work samples should be hosted on an external web-based storage platform (such as Google Drive, Vimeo, Soundcloud, etc.) and accessible for the entirety of the application period. 
    • Please upload a single pdf with brief descriptions of each submitted work sample and links to any relevant files or sites. External web (URL) address must be spelled out and not embedded as hyperlinks. Feel free to contact Julia.Waswo@dartmouth.edu with questions about any aspect of this application process.
  • Program Essays (max 250 words each)
    • Tell us about your Sonic Practice. Which projects and skill sets might you hope to develop during your time at Dartmouth?
    • Please discuss the role of hybridity, interdisciplinarity, and/or collaboration in your practice.
    • Name a few of your artistic heroes. What inspires you about their work? How does each resonate with your own artistic visions
