GRAD Winter Bucket List

The weather outside may be frightful, but winter in Hanover is quite delightful when you fill your bucket with this list of things to do in the local area:

  1. SKI! Dartmouth is situated deep in ski country! Nearby mountains include Killington, Okemo, Pico, Sunapee, and Stowe. More locally there is Whaleback, and Dartmouth’s own Skiway offering discounts for students and a shuttle bus from campus.
  2. Once the ice is thick enough, come out to skate on Occom Pond all winter long. You can also snowshoe, cross-country ski, or sled on the Hanover golf course along Route 10, near the Dartmouth Outing Club House (DOC). Rent skates or cross-country skis from the DOC House for day or overnight use at the student rate!
  3. Support the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams and the men’s and women’s basketball teams! Come cheer on the teams at home games in Thompson Arena and Leede Arena.
  4. Channel your inner Julia Child and try to make a tasty treat for a friend using a King Arthur Flour recipe! Remember to make extras for yourself!
  5. The Town of Hanover hosts the annual Occom Pond Party. Last year’s was affected by the weather, but this year is looking good and February 11 has been selected for the event with the theme: Blizzardry-A Magical Carnival! Check the Facebook group for more information and updates.
  6. Don’t forget about Winter Carnival at Dartmouth, happening over  February 9-12 this year! This is Dartmouth’s big annual winter extravaganza with a plethora of different events for students, alumni, and families. Plans are still coming together, but stay tuned to the Dartmouth website to learn more later this winter.
  7. Take a trip over to Cloudland Farm for their annual New Year's Day brunch for delicious local food to start your year.
  8. Learn to build an insulated igloo at the Montshire Museum at their Igloo Build event on February 18.
  9. Explore local areas with Vital Communities' Valley Quest. Self-guided scavenger hunts around local cultural, natural, and historical sites.
  10. The GSC will be hosting their annual semi-formal, and offering graduate ski nights at Whaleback – stay tuned for updates!
