Stipend Supplement 2023 FAQ

Which students will receive the supplement, and how much is it?

All PhD, MS, and MA students who received a monthly stipend payment for January 2023 (on 2/1/23) will receive a supplemental payment of $2,000.

How and when will this supplement be paid?

While the details are still being finalized, eligible students can expect to receive the $2,000 supplement with their April 1st stipend payment. International students receiving stipends must register in Sprintax for tax treaty benefits by February 28 for this payment to be taxed properly.

I recently defended my thesis and have completed all degree requirements, am I eligible for this supplement?

Only PhD, MS, or MA students who received a monthly stipend payment for January 2023 (on 2/1/23) will receive the supplement. Students who completed their degrees in the Fall '22 term or earlier are not eligible.

I am on leave this term, am I eligible for this supplement?

If you are on a personal or medical leave that started in the Winter '23 term, contact the Guarini or Thayer School (for ENGS students) offices about receiving the supplement if you return in the Spring '23 term.

I am a Thayer student completing my degree "in absentia," am I eligible for this supplement?

No.

Will I have to pay taxes on the supplement?

Yes, the supplements are considered taxable income.
