Policy Statement

Changes requiring Council on Graduate Studies (CGS) approval (if in doubt a change is "significant", please confirm with graduate registrar). Unless noted, these changes can be approved by a consent agenda or email vote and need not be discussed individually unless a requested by a CGS member.

  • Any changes in the course requirements for the degree (e.g. number of courses, change in the courses required).
  • Any significant changes to a required course (e.g. changes to grade mode; permanent change in delivery mode to/from in-person, hybrid, or remote; significant content change; change in course number; change in course title).
  • Any changes in other degree requirements (e.g. changes in qualifying exams, number of journal clubs, number of TA's, etc.).
  • Changes in concentrations for existing degrees (e.g. MALS Globalization, COSC Digital Arts, etc.).
  • Any changes noted below. The changes below require individual discussion at a CGS meeting.

Changes additionally requiring approval by the Academic Planning Council (APC):

  • Significant changes in the duration of the program, including those that would significantly decrease (or increase) the number of required courses/credits, and, if applicable, total tuition (for programs where the duration is defined, e.g. from 18 months to 12 months, 6 terms to 4 terms).
  • Changes in the mode of delivery of all courses/requirements for one or more terms to/from online, hybrid, or in-person (e.g. moving to an entirely hybrid or online program, making the first/last term remote, etc.).
  • Changes in the name of the degree (also requires Board of Trustee approval).

Note: Program-requested changes in tuition do not need approval by CGS or APC, but do require approval of the Guarini Dean, relevant School Dean, Provost, Executive Vice President, and Board of Trustees.
