Grill Use Guidelines

Summary of Policy

Guidelines for use of grill in the Guarini Commons outdoor space.

(These policies exclude Residential Operations, OPO, DDS, and FOM)

Policy Statement

  1. Each grill must be managed by an office or department that will oversee and maintain the grill. This unit is responsible for making sure students are aware of these guidelines.
  2. Students may not bring or utilize any type of grill on Campus for individual use.
  3. The grill location must be approved by Conferences and Events. Contact C&E several days in advance of planned usage to allow time for a site visit.
  4. Portable grills should be used on a firm, flat, stable surface. No grilling on balconies, decks, or wood surfaces. NEVER grill inside or under a tent or awning. Grilling on noncombustible surfaces such as concrete or asphalt is preferred over grilling on grassy ground.
  5. Charcoal grills are not allowed.
  6. No grills will be used within ten feet of any buildings, pedestrian walkways, overhead branches, or combustible materials.
  7. Propane cannot be carried through or stored inside buildings.
  8. An ABC type fire extinguisher designed for this use only must be within 25 feet of the grill. At least one user who will be present while the grill is in use should take the online BioRAFT training course "Fire extinguishers at Work" found at https://dartmouth.bioraft.com/rafttraining/course/21
  9. All grills must be cleaned and inspected prior to use. Do not allow fat to build up on the grates or on the trays under the grates.
  10. Never attempt to relocate a grill once it has been lit or a grill that is hot.
  11. Never leave the grill unattended.
  12. All portable grills will be stored properly (no inside storage).
  13. If a fire emergency occurs, call 911 immediately.

GAS GRILL SAFETY TIPS

  1. Always make certain that the control knobs for the gas grills are in the OFF position prior to igniting and when storing grill. When grill is not in use, knob on propane cylinder should be in the OFF position as well.
  2. If gas grill fails to light on first attempt, turn the burner control off and allow the gas to dissipate prior to trying again.
  3. If the fire on the burners of a gas grill goes out during cooking, turn all of the knobs to the OFF position. Open lid and wait five minutes before attempting to relight.
  4. Always start gas grills with the lid in the open position. Gas can collect if the lid is down which can create an explosion when grill is lit.
  5. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions when connecting or disconnecting a gas grill.
  6. By cleaning and performing general maintenance on a gas grill, it can assist in keeping them safer to use.
  7. Check tubes leading to burners for any form of blockage. Check hoses for cracks, leaks or brittleness. Ensure that there are no sharp bends in hoses. If cracks or leaks appear in hoses, follow manufacturer's suggestions to check for leaks and replacement of damaged hoses.
  8. Use gas grill in a well-ventilated area.
  9.  Always store propane cylinder in a secured upright position.
