Imagine collaborating with government leaders in a developing country, supporting foreign military forces in fighting criminal organizations, confronting the challenges of corruption and poverty, while also adapting to a new culture, language, and country. I had all these responsibilities and more working in the Economic and Political Affairs Division of the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala in the Spring of 2018.

Everyone is quiet when the food is served. They were a chatty bunch moments ago, as old and new friends are at dinner parties. But now they curl over their plates allowing the spice-scented steam to warm and caress their smiles. They tenderly take up food with their fingers or forks. Slowly, they begin to speak again. Hushed, reverent compliments are directed near what feels like the center of the room—the oven—by which Priyanka Sivaramakrishnan MALS ’17 sits. Priyanka is the orchestrator of this evening.

Nicholas Graham is passionate about building and sustaining communities. He attended Dartmouth College from 2012 to 2015, where he received a Master’s degree in Cultural Studies. During his time at Dartmouth, he served as Communications Coordinator for the Office of Graduate Studies and performed in music ensembles and competitions on campus, earning Grand Prize in the 2014 and 2015 Culley Concerto Competition. Nicholas wrote his thesis on the adaptation of instrumental performers to advancements in digital technology.
