With the generous support of the Alumni Research Award, I successfully obtained preliminary spectroscopy of roughly 200 chemically interesting, low-mass stars using the SpUpNIC spectrograph on the 1.9m telescope at the South African Astronomical Observatory's site in Sutherland, South Africa.

Several times a year I travel with my advisor, Dr. John Thorstensen, to the Michigan Dartmouth MIT (MDM) Observatory outside of Tucson, AZ, where we study a specific type of binary star system called a cataclysmic variable (CV). These star systems are similar to our solar system, but instead have two stars, one orbiting around the other like the Earth around the Sun. The orbiting star is similar to the Sun, but considerably less massive (meaning it has less matter).

Mackenzie Jones, a 5th year PhD candidate in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, is this year’s Neukom Prize winner for Outstanding Graduate Research in Computational Science. The prize was awarded to Jones for her work on the cosmic evolution of supermassive black holes.
