Interdisciplinary Programs

The Medical Physics Education Program is available to enrolled Dartmouth PhD students in engineering and the physical sciences who have an undergraduate preparation in physics (of at least four courses beyond introductory college physics). This program was accredited in 2016 by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP), and provides the curricular training required for successful completion of an accredited medical physics graduate program. This pathway is required for a career in clinical medical physics and enables graduates to successfully sit for the ABR board exam and apply for CAMPEP accredited residency programs.

Interested students must apply for admission to the accredited program at the time of application to their PhD program at Dartmouth or shortly afterwards. All students should discuss this option with their faculty advisor and one of the program directors. This program is also available to post doctoral fellows who may enroll in the CAMPEP accredited certificate program at Dartmouth allowing pursuit of a career in clinical medical physics.

Dartmouth's PhD Innovation (PhD-I) Program is the nation's first doctoral-level program aimed at providing PhD students the skills and support necessary to engage in enterprising research and translate their work into the commercial sphere. 

Offered through both Thayer and Guarini School for Graduate and Advanced Studies, students in this selective fellowship complete all the regular PhD requirements as well as additional coursework that prepares them to build an enterprise based on technical innovation. PhD-I students receive funding along with other support to launch their own start-ups and take their research discoveries to market.

The MD-PhD program at Dartmouth combines systematic and rigorous research preparation for the PhD degree with the full MD curriculum. The program at the Geisel School of Medicine offers opportunities that are both challenging and rewarding for students who are committed and motivated. Dartmouth financially and academically provides the support and guidance needed by students pursing the MD-PhD degrees.

The PhD/MBA joint degree program offers the unique opportunity for PhD students at Dartmouth College to finish off their training with management education. The joint degree aims to produce individuals who are not only thoroughly trained in a scientific discipline but also possess fundamental business and entrepreneurial skills. The program is currently only available to PhD students at Dartmouth. Students must apply to and be admitted to the MBA program. The PhD experience will be counted as post-bachelors degree work experience. Matriculating students must enter with the regular Tuck class in the fall and complete the required first-year Tuck core curriculum. Students are expected to participate in an internship during the summer between their first and second Tuck years, to reinforce the MBA experience. Courses taken during the PhD program will be counted as the equivalent of one term's worth of electives. While application and admission to the MBA program can occur at any point while enrolled in the PhD program, it's recommended that students apply in the third or fourth year of their program.
