    How does your brain work? Maybe there are days when you wonder if it’s working at all. This fascinating organ is arguably what makes us who we are, but how this happens is largely a mystery. At a recent Brain Buzz event, hosted by the School of Graduate Studies in partnership with the Upper Valley Food Coop in White River Junction and the Vermont Institute for Natural Sciences (VINS), PhD researchers Emily Stephens and Max Mehlman introduced a packed room to their research and a basic overview of what we know about the brain.

    The 31st Annual Neuroscience Day at Dartmouth held on Saturday, April 8th, saw the attendance of over 100 faculty members, post-doctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students from Dartmouth, Keene State College, and the University of Vermont. Attendees congregated at the Class of 1978 Life Sciences Center to share their research and discuss current work in the field of neuroscience.

    Humans have a remarkable capacity for processing spatial information, allowing us to maintain a sense of direction and location as we navigate within our environment. This ability is largely employed unconsciously and thus often taken for granted; however, individuals suffering from chronic spatial disorientation due to brain or vestibular system damage are painfully aware of the vital contribution spatial processing makes to our quality of life.

    Spatial cognition and navigation are evolutionarily critical for a number of tasks that are necessary for survival, including the locating of food, water, and mates. Research in the spatial cognition mechanisms in the human brain has enabled a greater understanding of disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, in which one of the most common symptoms is spatial disorientation. Rat models have enabled a much more fine-grained understanding of these spatial cognition processes through the recording of single neurons in the brains of freely moving animals.
