  • International Graduate Student Profile: Selbi Nuryyeva

    Selbi Nuryyeva, a chemistry graduate student at Dartmouth in the lab of Professor Ivan Aprahamian, recently had her groundbreaking research on a drug for Malaria published in Nature Communications. At Dartmouth, Nuryyeva conducts research on molecular machines, an area of chemistry that won the Nobel Prize this year. Her interest in research began during her undergraduate career at NYU Abu Dhabi where she took advantage of several extracurricular research opportunities.

  • When Sorry Is the Wrong Word: Exploring Rejection

    It hurts to be told “no.” Even if you are being rejected by a computer or a group of people you dislike, you still feel the pain of rejection. Not only does it hurt, but there can also be significant down-stream consequences: one study found that thirteen out of fifteen school shooters were rejected at some point. It also has an effect on our physical response with noticeable drops in immune function.

    How does your brain work? Maybe there are days when you wonder if it’s working at all. This fascinating organ is arguably what makes us who we are, but how this happens is largely a mystery. At a recent Brain Buzz event, hosted by the School of Graduate Studies in partnership with the Upper Valley Food Coop in White River Junction and the Vermont Institute for Natural Sciences (VINS), PhD researchers Emily Stephens and Max Mehlman introduced a packed room to their research and a basic overview of what we know about the brain.

  • Rallying for Science

    On Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, 2017, tens of thousands of people participated in rallies, walks, and marches held in Washington D.C. and in hundreds of other cities across the world. The March for Science saw an outpouring of support for science that was “unprecedented in terms of the scale and breadth of the scientific community involved,” according to Robert Proctor, a professor of the history of science at Stanford University.
