[more]Soto is majoring in physics and minoring in math and is just two classes away from completing her bachelor’s degree. Although her undergraduate education thus far has focused primarily on physics, she is enjoying the research she’s completing this summer in astronomy. Soto is researching active galactic nuclei, or AGNs, “which are essentially black holes in the center of galaxies.”
[more]Rosario is majoring in electrical engineering and will be a junior this fall. Rosario is spending his time this summer working closely with graduate student David McClatchy on a research study overseen by Principal Investigator Professor Brian Pogue in the Thayer School of Engineering. This study focuses on figuring out which scanning technique is most effective at identifying if breast cancer is present at the margins of the tissue extracted, knowledge that could save future patients from undergoing a second follow-up surgery to remove the residual cancer.
[more]Martinez currently majors in biology, but has strong interests in other life sciences such as immunology and toxicology. While here this summer she is conducting research on a specific type of bacteria and its impacts on the human immune system under the guidance of Professor Brent Berwin in the department of microbiology and immunology at the Geisel School of Medicine. After she graduates next June, she hopes to apply to PhD programs nationally, but emphasized that “Dartmouth is a top choice. I like it here.”
[more]He will be a junior next school year at Emory University in Atlanta where he is double-majoring in neuroscience and chemistry. While part of the ASURE program this summer, Hassen is researching the PTEN gene and how it relates to the development of autism, more specifically, he’s exploring the potential for possible therapies relating to autism by doing exploratory research on phospholipase A2. “I’m really enjoying the research because I’m learning so much!”
