Agriculture Research at Dartmouth: From Local to Global Solutions

At the Dartmouth Organic Farm, students and faculty use the acreage on Route 10 for a wide range of projects ranging from growing produce to distribute to food shelf programs, to bat echolocation research, to soil health research. On a larger scale, research at the Dartmouth Toxic Metal Superfund Research Program investigates how to reduce arsenic in rice, a staple food for more than half the world's population. Soil health and plant nutrition go hand in hand. How do these two research programs contribute to local and global farming practices? What are sustainable solutions? Come to Science Pub to find out!

Thursday, April 26 from 6-8pm. Come early to grab a seat!

Discussion Leaders:

Todd Warczak is a molecular and cellular biologist at Dartmouth College focusing on how plants accumulate, identify, and detoxify arsenic. His work in the Guerinot lab aims to help plants like rice prevent arsenic from reaching their seeds, which happens to be our largest source of dietary arsenic. Todd arrived in the Upper Valley in 2012 after receiving his B.S. in Biology from the University of Utah. He expects to receive his PhD from Dartmouth by 2019, when consulting peer-reviewed researchers becomes trendy and all the politicians will be doing it.

Laura Braasch is the sustainability program manager at the Dartmouth Organic Farm. She supports faculty teaching and research on the farm site and engages students in hands on learning about sustainable agriculture and food systems. When she's not at the farm, Laura enjoys playing the mandolin, taking photos, letterpressing, and rock climbing.
